DSDC Supports SSAFA (The Armed Forces Charity)

For over 10 years now, we have been supporting the amazing work of SSAFA. We have been providing specific dementia education training to veterans, case workers and volunteers, who support people living with a dementia.

The project is being led by our Senior Dementia Consultant Dave Wilson-Wynne. Over the past year, he has spent time, exploring research and best practice guidance to help develop a training course, which explores an enhanced level of dementia education, how to recognise and support unmet needs, the importance of the environment and trauma informed practice.

We have facilitated education sessions in Stirling, Aberdeen and Glasgow so far, with another two sessions coming later this year. For our veterans, their families and wider support networks, transition, routine and lifestyle, play a crucial role in their everyday life. In this article, you will see our video we recorded with staff from SSAFA, who explain the importance of the project and how this learning will be shared throughout the SSAFA Scotland branches.

The least we can do, is to better understand the unique needs of those who have. served our county, who are now living with a dementia. We must educate ourselves and wider society on the importance of person led dementia care, for those who have experienced trauma, whose lives have been very unique in terms of multiple transitions of jobs, houses and countries. When we know the person fully, understand their experiences and life history, we can provide meaningful support that not only enhances quality of life, but maintains identity and purpose, which is vital for the individual’s this project supports.
