Designers

DSDC is internationally renowned for its work in dementia design, which the centre has been advocating since its inception in 1989.

Dementia design is a recognised non-pharmacological intervention to support someone with dementia. Research has demonstrated that it can improve quality of life for the person with dementia and their care partner, reduce negative responsive behaviours and support abilities for longer. We offer a range of services that can assist those working in the design sector to create environments and products which are supportive for our ageing population and people living with dementia.

  • Environmental Design Training

DSDC has created a range of training courses and events focusing on general aspects of dementia and care through to more specialised areas, including ageing and dementia design. Our design courses are available online for you to learn at a pace that suits you. Every training course is underpinned by research and delivered by our experienced team. DSDC is also able to work with organisations to deliver bespoke training sessions that meet their specific requirements. Our Intersection of Dementia + Design training course provides you with 14 hours’ RIBA CPD. We also offer a free one-hour RIBA CPD approved video which has been specifically designed for anyone working in design and construction.

  • Environmental Toolkit (EADDAT)

For designers and specifiers looking for more information on how the environment can impact a person living with dementia then Tier 2 and 3 of ‘Environments for Ageing and Dementia Design Assessment Tool’ (EADDAT) is an ideal place to start. This toolkit explains more about how the places and environments we work, live and socialise in can impact a person living with dementia. There are checklists that you can work through to make small changes that can have a positive impact on a person’s experience within a space.

  • Product Accreditation

Using the latest research, DSDC assesses products to determine their suitability for people with dementia. A product accreditation can help specifiers and designers select products which adhere to dementia design principles.
