Design to Enrich the Lives of People Living with a Dementia: within Hong Kong
Many countries are facing challenges related to a rapidly growing ageing population, requiring targeted solutions that consider cultural and social contexts. In Hong Kong alone there were over 1.45 million individuals over the age of 65; a 54.2% increase over the past decade. This is not a unique situation, but it provides opportunities for organisations and countries to collaborate, share knowledge and experience, and create spaces which support our ageing population.
For over thirty years the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling has been promoting evidenced based dementia design as a non-pharmacological approach to supporting people living with a diagnosis of a dementia to live well. With a strong international reputation in the field, DSDC strives to improve quality of life for anyone with a diagnosis, and their care partners, through both design and care.
DSDC has collaborated with the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing (JCCPA) in Hong Kong to provide the Best Practice in Dementia Care Learning Programme for local practitioners across the health and social care sectors who are interested in improving their knowledge and skills in ageing and dementia care. Now in our eighth year of this collaboration, both DSDC and JCCPA celebrate the success of the programme and its significant contribution to improving the quality of care for people living with a dementia.
DSDC and JCCPA value their partnership and are continually seeking opportunities for further collaboration in dementia-related research, training, consultancy services, and knowledge exchange. It is through this partnership that DSDC and JCCPA have united to create the resource ‘Design to Enrich the Lives of people living with a dementia: within Hong Kong.’
The publication includes chapters on:
Ageing and dementia
Designing fundamentals
Designing domestic environments
Designing care home environments
Case studies
This publication will be a invaluable resource for supporting Hong Kong, and indeed other Asian cities, to raise awareness of environmental design that supports people living with a dementia.
Design to Enrich the Lives of people living with a dementia: within Hong Kong will be published in the coming days and you will be able to access the resource from this page when it is available.
