Golf and dementia

Golf in Society at Stirling Golf Club

Golf in Society is a social enterprise who help people who live with dementia to keep healthy and socially connected through golf.

“I had never played golf before, and Golf in Society has introduced me to a sport I really enjoy. The days are brilliantly organised, the facilities are excellent and the camaraderie among the other people who are going through what I’m having to deal with is fantastic.”

The service was set up in Yorkshire back in 2016 by Anthony Blackburn who supported his dad in his later years, and golf was the hook that enabled them to enjoy being together in a fun and healthy environment. Now Golf in Society is growing fast, currently based at 9 golf clubs across Scotland and England with plans to work in collaboration with more golf clubs to set up supported golf sessions over the next year.

Getting back to normal

As we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis we’re more determined than ever to support families improve their lives at their local golf venue.  With a track record of delivering over 1000 golf sessions to date and a burning desire to make golf more accessible, more often and to more families, our social mission is on track to play an integral part in encouraging people to enjoy the healthier, happier life they deserve.

Golf clubs at the heart of the community

By putting golf clubs at the heart of local communities, we create opportunities for people living with chronic illnesses such as dementia to discover a happier, healthier life with golf at the heart of it.  It doesn’t matter whether someone has been a lifelong golfer or brand new to the sport - everyone is welcome. Our sessions also provide regular, reliable, respite time for unpaid carers.

Stirling Golf Club

We are proud to be working in partnership with Stirling Golf Club who have recently set up a Golf in Society group.  We are now open to welcoming people who live with dementia who might be interested in getting involved.  Our sessions take place every Monday afternoon from 1pm – 3pm using the accessible Par 3 Golf Academy course.  The community at Stirling Golf Club have been amazing, and they are 100% behind what we are doing - they have supported us at every step of the way.

Our 2-hour sessions are led by a Community Golf Activator and supported by volunteers and members from Stirling Golf Club.
